WEEK ONE
We had an amazing first day of Summer Camp! One highlight was when 12-year-old camper Asbel swam for the first time with us, creating a memory he will treasure forever. We also had two parents join our outing. After the pool, we had a blast making TikToks while enjoying various recreational activities, with everything going smoothly—no incidents reported!
On Thursday, we enjoyed a tour at the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum. During our visit, we learned that Dunbar High School was the first African American high school in the country and discovered the incredible work of artist Elizabeth Catlett. We even completed some stamped art before taking a group picture and heading over to Anacostia Skate Park. Unfortunately, we had a minor injury when Viyah fractured her wrist while sitting down. We called her mother right away and kept in touch throughout the evening.

WEEK TWO
This week has been packed with fun and learning! On Monday, we watched the movie Elio, which tells the story of a child living with his aunt who feels lonely and dreams of a better life with aliens in space. Afterward, we explored a lovely trail at Chessie Big Backyard. Tuesday was all about learning as we visited the Frederick Douglass Home in Southeast D.C. The youth residents were very engaged during the tour, eagerly answering questions from the guide, and we wrapped up with a film about Douglass's life in the auditorium, followed by lunch and a trip to The Fields at RFK.
On Wednesday, we had to switch things up a bit since some kids thought it was too chilly for the indoor pool (lol!). Instead, we enjoyed three hours of trampoline activities at Sky Zone Trampoline Park before heading out for lunch. Finally, on Thursday, we visited LOL Stations in Greenbelt, Maryland. Although I wasn’t particularly impressed with the venue, the kids had a blast exploring the attractions and even playing a fun game of laser tag!

WEEK THREE
We started the week on Monday with a valuable lesson in adaptability when our tour guide didn’t show up, leading us unexpectedly to the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. There, we had the chance to learn about the money printing process and the fascinating history of currency, which was a great experience before heading to lunch and concluding our day. On Tuesday, we held a meeting to discuss the importance of respect and active listening before visiting the National Building Museum.
After the tour, we enjoyed lunch together, wrapping up our day nicely. Wednesday took us to Ocean Dunes, a fantastic water park in Virginia, where we were thrilled to see the youth connect with others. Francesca, in particular, excelled at swimming and made several new friends during our visit. Finally, on Thursday, we went to the indoor swimming pool at Deanwood, but unfortunately, the experience was less than satisfactory due to various restrictions in place, leading us to decide not to return there. Afterward, we had lunch and wrapped up our day.

WEEK FOUR
This week was filled with exciting adventures! On Monday, we took a trip to Chantilly to visit the Air and Space Museum, which had a different vibe from the one in D.C.—much more spacious and with paid activities, but still a lot of fun! The kids particularly enjoyed the gravity activity. After lunch, we headed home. On Tuesday, we visited Oxon Hill Farm, where we fed goats and horses, walked with chickens, teased some pigs, and even hiked a mile through the woods, hugging a few trees along the way. We later enjoyed lunch in then picnic area before wrapping up our day at The Fields.
Wednesday brought us to Ocean Dunes, where we had a fantastic time enjoying all the exciting water activities and slides. After a fun-filled morning, we relaxed with a delicious lunch by the pool, leaving us with happy memories as we headed home, excited for our next adventure. Finally, on Thursday, we stopped to grab some snacks on our way to Wheaton Regional Park, where we enjoyed a guided train ride, a carousel ride, and some fun making sandcastles in the sand. We paused for a meal before heading home.
